A report released last March by American Express on the state of women-owned businesses estimated that women owned more than 8.5 million businesses in the U.S. in 2013. The report, which was based on U.S. Census Bureau data, also found that over the past 16 years, women-owned businesses have grown by nearly 60 percent, exceeding the national average.
